On a sunny Sunday in January the community of Chutinamit opened its doors to celebrate the inauguration of their new two classroom primary school, school bathrooms and kitchen built by Constru Casa.
All was ready for a grand celebration. Streamers and balloons had been strung throughout the classrooms and the children donned traditional clothing. The ceremony begun with marching in with the Guatemalan flag and singing the national anthem. On hand to give speeches of thanks and carry out a ribbon cutting ceremony were members of the local council, Mil Milagros and Constru Casa volunteers, donors and staff. After the ceremony everyone was invited to join in a traditional Mayan feast prepared by the women of the community.
The inauguration marks a milestone in the Chutinamit community project as we finish the school for 21 students and move on to the second phase of construction, adding second rooms to 22 family homes, a community center, school office and a washbasin area for the school bathrooms. To commemorate the beginning of phase two Badgett Playhouse representative Bill Minihan and the community mayor joined together in laying the first concrete block.
Thanks so much to our volunteers, donors, the Badgett Playhouse, Mil Milagros, the local council and of course the community for making us feel welcome.
