Newsletter March 2015
Dear Friends of Constru Casa,
Welcome to our first newsletter for 2015!
Last year was a full of achievements and 2015 is off to an equally great start. We have been fortunate in having an influx of volunteers, 125 this year to date, helping us on a range of projects. Already we have commenced phase 2 of Chutinamit, began construction on a secondary school in Ciudad Vieja, built ten new homes for ten families in San Miguel Escobar and finished work on a two classroom primary school in Chocola. Thanks to all our fantastic volunteers and donors for their continuing support. We look forward to welcoming more of you to Guatemala over the coming year!
All the best,
The Constru Casa Team
Phase two of Chutinamit
Phase two of the Chutinamit Community project is already well underway! This year we have plans to build a community center, washbasin area for the school bathrooms, a school office and 22 second rooms for family homes. The official beginning of phase two was marked by an inauguration of the community classrooms, school bathrooms and kitchen. Members of the local council, Mil Milagros and Constru Casa volunteers, donors and staff were on hand to give speeches of thanks and encouragement and partake in a ribbon cutting ceremony. Friends of Constru Casa vice president Bill Minihan and the mayor of the local council joined together in laying the first concrete block for phase two of the housing construction project. A group of volunteers from Kentucky built the first four rooms of family homes over the first week and were followed by volunteers from Builders Beyond Borders who constructed an additional six rooms and began work on the school office and community center.
A big thank you to the Badgett Playhouse and their friends, Builders Beyond Borders and our volunteers and donors for all their support!
Three classrooms in Ciudad Vieja
In the first week of February we began construction on a secondary school in Ciudad Vieja in partnership with nonprofit Niños de Guatemala. We are currently working on three classrooms and hope to build more in the future.
Thanks to Niños de Guatemala for initiating the project and the Builders Beyond Borders volunteers for all their hard work.
Two classrooms in Chocola
Over the previous six weeks we have been constructing two classrooms for a rural primary school in Chocola in the department of Suchitepéquez. On March 6 we join with the local community of Chocola, partner organization Miracles in Action and Amigos de Chocola in celebrating the opening of these new classrooms.
New homes in San Miguel Escobar
Gloria Margarita and Ernesto Zuleta have a young family. At only 33 and 34 years old respectively they are parents to five children between the ages of 14 and 6. Prior to this year their house was pierced together with cane and plastic sheeting. The situation is now much improved since receiving their new concrete block home. A total of ten families in the community of San Miguel Escobar have been selected to receive new homes this year.
Thanks to our volunteers from Nebraska, Ohio State University, Alec’s group, the Dunn School and our partner organization De la Gente for their support.
The influx of volunteers is set to continue of the next month with groups from the United States, including another group of 44 volunteers from Builders Beyond Borders. Thanks to all our volunteers for their support!
We are looking forward to seeing all our Antigua supporters at our first fundraising night at Pappy’s BBQ on March 26. Our friends at Pappy’s will be opening their doors to support Constru Casa in what promises to be a fun night of eating, drinking and sharing stories. All are welcome and drink proceeds go directly to funding Constru Casa projects.
