Help us to keep on building

Kelsey Arends

Kelsey Arends 2I worked with Constru Casa while on an international trip with a service learning organization at my university in Nebraska, USA. The week I spent working with the family, masons, and Constru Casa organizers was incredible.

Constru Casa truly empowers the families they work with and allows volunteers to connect with the families they are serving alongside. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to construct, with the guidance of Victor, a talented local mason, and alongside an incredible family, a new place to start and grow.

One of the best moments was actually when we were forced to pause our working one morning because of heavy Guatemalan rain. We took cover under the corrugated metal structure that already existed, and instead passed the morning talking with Victor - the mason on our site, the mother of the family, and her nephew who was helping with construction. Each of them welcomed us into their lives, shared their stories and perspectives, and were open and honest about what they had experienced and what they were working toward in the future. Speaking with each of them was an unforgettable moment that changed me.

During my time in Guatemala, I learned how to build a house. I learned about socially responsible work being done to assist Guatemalans living in poverty. More than anything else though, I learned about relationship building and universal human struggles. Because of my time with Constru Casa, I developed a true appreciation for a home: a place that Victor explained as something that everyone needs as a place to start, a place to grow success and happiness from.
