Hello, my name is Ben Huisman, I'm from Holland and I worked for 4 weeks as a Constru Casa volunteer (from May to June). I already knew of Constru Casa as I volunteered with them six years ago. At that time it was a much smaller organization. The office was situated in the house of the founder, Carolina van Heerde, in Antigua. Whilst I was there we celebrated the construction of the 300th house with a party attended by the Dutch in-country Ambassador.
My second visit to Antigua and Constru Casa has been marked by recognition. It is good to be back. For my first two weeks volunteering I worked on the construction of a secondary school for Niños de Guatemala in Ciudad Vieja. This school is being built in phases with the eventual aim being the construction of six classrooms for children between the ages of 8 to 14. The chief foreman, Carlos, commands an enthusiastic group of hard workers. During my two weeks onsite I found all the construction workers to be welcoming and informative.
After my first 2 weeks I worked in the Constru Casa office now based in San Pedro las Huertas, a small village just outside of Antigua. Drawing from my career background as an engineer I worked on several projects making budgets and drawing up construction plans, including housing models, schools and a medical clinic. Personally those two weeks were a special experience and I was able to get to know the enthusiastic group that make up the Constru Casa office. I would like to thank Constru Casa for all their assistance and wish them happiness and success in the future.
