Be a part of Constru Casa!

Volunteering at Constru Casa offers a unique cultural experience. Our volunteers share intensive work time with the local masons, and have the opportunity to share the lives of an underprivileged Guatemalan family, all the while contributing to improve their lives through the building of a new house. You can also enjoy living in one of the most beautiful cities in Guatemala--Antigua!

volunteersConstru Casa houses are built by local construction workers and their assistants. At least one member of the beneficiary family will also help build. Construction volunteers and the family member work with and under the direction of the masons. For volunteers, the works consists of digging foundations, carrying materials (including concrete block, sand and rocks), mixing concrete, and generally helping the masons in their tasks.

It takes approximately two weeks to build a complete house. We encourage volunteers to work for two weeks in order to see the construction of a house from the ground up. The work sites vary considerably, depending on rural or community settings and the general context of the family.  Usually, construction volunteers are placed in small towns near Antigua, but depending on the volunteers’ preferences and our current work sites, we can arrange for our volunteers to work in even more rural areas.

We want to ensure that our volunteers enjoy a safe, enriching, and fun experience in Guatemala. Constru Casa staff will help volunteers arrange accommodation (hotel, hostel or home-stay), transportation, and a Spanish school (if needed). Constru Casa will also provide a complete orientation to the project and construction work and offer full support during your stay. We can help to arrange accommodation, transport, and activities according to your wishes.

SimoneGroup

Last month we were delighted to welcome back Simone Kenny from Australia. Simone has been a serial organiser of volunteer groups for ten years. This time she came with a great group of friends that all donated to, and joined in to help us build two, 3 room houses in San Felipe close to Antigua.  It was always going to be a challenge to get both houses completed in the six days they were here, but these Aussie muckers made it look easy! We are also delighted then that Simone will be coming again in January with a huge group of 35 students from Eltham College in Melbourne. They will continue working in the remote community of Hacienda Vieja that her previous group from Eltham started last year. We can't wait for that! Thank you Simone, and thank you to all your amazing volunteers!
