Organisation

Since November 2005, Constru Casa is officially registered in Guatemala as: “Asociación Constru Casa”. The Board consists of a president, a vice-president, a secretary, a treasurer and members. The Board assembles four times a year.

The objective of “Asociación Constru Casa” has been defined as follows:

• To provide housing for the poor in Guatemala by constructing and improving basic houses;

• To improve the living conditions of those living with scarce resources;

• To provide education, health care, and other services for the poor in all of Guatemala;

• To strengthen and inspire communal participation between the poor people and society, in order to reach personal, familiar and social growth.

The project is managed by Carolien van Heerde and she works in a team with Ranferí Vásquez, the project manager, with Carmen Monterroso, who is working in management, strategic alliances and promotion of the project, with Sofia Garcia, as an Management Assistant and with José Luis Técun for the collection of the monthly payments and different jobs to be done.

Local construction workers are working for the project and carry out the construction work. The construction workers are hired on a contractual basis for every house.

Volunteers

The houses are built by two to three paid construction workers, together with their helpers. The families assist with the building. Additionally, volunteers can also be placed on a building project, with a maximum of three volunteers per house.

The helpers assist the construction workers with all their activities. The families and volunteers mainly assist the helpers, and thus work together with the construction workers. The volunteers are expected to treat the construction workers, their helpers and the families with respect.

Volunteers mainly dig out ground, carry building materials, mix cement, assist with the laying of stones and do preparation work for the construction workers. Please note the work is physically strenuous.

Working on building a house in Guatemala proves to be a special and unique experience for the volunteers, mainly in working together with the local population and families whom the houses are built for. For the new owners, the assistance of volunteers is of great moral support.

Building locations vary. We partially build in the little villages around Antigua, and partially in the inland. That means the working conditions may vary considerably, as will do the experiences. A lot depends on your own attitude, we expect you to be flexible.

If you are interested in assisting us with the building please contact us:
