Strategic Alliances with Social Projects
Constru Casa works together with other social programs.
We value these relations because it helps us to assign the help in a
more informed way, directing it towards those who need it most.
Since our foundation we have worked together with important
institutions including SOSEP, Hogares Comunitarios (community houses)
Clínica para SIDA San José (San José AIDS Clinic),
Asociación El Buen Samaritano (The Good Shepherd Association),
Asociación Transiciones (Transitions Association), Familias de
Esperanza (Common Hope), Christians Children’s Fund, through Corazón
de los Niños (Heart of the Children), Association Santiaguito
in Santiago Zamora and the Asociación Multi of FRAGUA (Multi
Association).
SOSEP
Through Sosep, we have built houses in San José Las Cañas,
a community approximately 5 km from Antigua, along the road between
Guatemala-City and Antigua. The land the families have here is all close
to and on the steep slopes of the mountain there.
About 15 years ago the mayor of Santa Lucia at that time
gave these people a piece of land they could live on. Since then the
people have lived there in the simple shacks they constructed under
bare circumstances.
Hogares Comunitarios
Through the Hogares Comunitarios we have built in various villages:
- San Antonio Aguas Calientes, a village located about 20 minutes from
Antigua, and known for its beautiful weavings. Directly connected to
San Antonio is Santa Catarina Barahona. In both villages, Constru Casa
co-operates with the Hogar Comunitario of doña Nora, where 24
children receive day-care.
- Santa María de Jesús, a very traditional
and poor village, located on the slopes of the Agua volcano, next to
Antigua. Santa María de Jesús is one of the poorest villages
of Sacatepéquez. Constru Casa co-operates with the Hogar Comunitario
of doña Jessica here, where 10 children are taken care of.
- Santo Tomas Milpas Altas is located about half an hour
from Antigua. In the surrounding areas a lot of fruits and vegetables
are grown and there are a lot of companies located that process these
fruits and vegetables. A large number of the inhabitants of the village
work in these factories. Constru Casa works here in co-operation with
the Hogar Comunitario of doña Munda. About 20 children between
the age of 0 and 7 receive day-care there.
- San Miguel Escobar, in this small village, located
about 15 minutes from Antigua, Constru Casa co-operates with the Hogar
Comunitario of doña Irma, where 10 children are looked after.
- Santa Ana, a village next to Antigua that is part of
the Antigua council. In this village, Constru Casa co-operates with
the Hogar Comunitario run by doña Ester. She takes care of 24
children in her house, where she lives with two complete families, consisting
of her daughters and their children.
El Buen Samaritano
Through El Buen Samartitano, houses have been built in Jocotenango,
a village with almost 30.000 inhabitants close to Antigua, where the
poorest people live.
Bendición de Dios
In co-operation with this school for poor children, supported by the
Dutch Foundation Los Niños, Constru Casa builds houses in Alotenango,
a very poor village, located about 14 km from Antigua. In this village,
most of the about 18.000 inhabitants live under abominable circumstances
in Alotenango and its surrounding area. Bendición de Dios supports
Constru Casa with the selection of the families, finding good construction
workers and preparing the families.
Familias de Esperanza (Common
Hope)
Common Hope ensures healthcare, education, housing and personal development
for the poor Guatemalan children, their families and local communities.
With Common Hope’s programme, about 8000 people are being helped.
Common Hope is the first organisation Constru Casa is
co-operating with that builds houses themselves, although it is not
their primary objective. Common Hope delivers houses made of fibrolite
with concrete floors, mostly to families who do not own land. The houses
are built in a way they can be taken apart and re-built elsewhere. However,
the quality of the houses leaves little to be desired and they last
for about 5 to 10 years as a maximum. Therefore, in agreement with the
organisation, Constru Casa now offers houses to families within the
project who own their own piece of land, and live in abominable circumstances,
in order to offer them a better long term future.
The social workers of the project who are in touch with
the project’s families assist Constru Casa with the selection
and support of the families.
Through Common Hope, houses are built in various villages
within about 5 km from Antigua: San Miguel Escobar, Santa Ana, San Juan
del Obispo, San Pedro las Huertas, El Hato, San Gaspar Vivar, San Juan
Gascon, San Felipe de Jesús.
The committee in the community
of Chocantariy
In the village of Chocantariy, close to Momostenango in the department
of Totonicapan, about 200 families live together. The type of house
that is built here deviates from the standard houses built by Constru
Casa, because in this rural environment, people prefer to have one room
where they live communally. Also, it does not suit the surroundings
to have a block house, so it was decided to put stucco work on the outside
of the house, and to paint the roof. This way, the houses fit their
environment, whilst the living circumstances are still being improved
in line with the intensions of Constru Casa.
The committee in the community
of Magdalena Milpas Altas
Through the committee, houses have been built in Magdalena Milpas Altas,
a new community located at about 30 minutes from Antigua, created after
hurricane Mitch (1997).
Guatemaltecas de Corazon
In co-operation with the women’s committee, consisting of 300
local women, houses have been built in Santo Domingo Xenacoj, a village
situated approximately 25 km from Antigua, on the edge of the department
of Sacatepéquez, right on the border with the department of Chimaltenango.
The women’s group is run by Felipa, a young woman who tries to
help the local population. She assists us with the selection and support
of the poorest families.
The Aidsclinic San José
in San Lucas Sacatepéquez
The aim of the Jospice International San José is offering integral
care to children and adults who are affected with HIV/Aids. Also, the
Aidsclinic develops prevention activities for the population as a whole,
in order to reduce the number of people affected by this disease.
Constru Casa works together with
the Jospice to provide housing for the families treated in the Jospice,
and that live in bad conditions. The Jospice assists with the selection
and preparation of the families.
The Jospice treats people from
all Guatemala. Houses have been built in San Antonio Aguas Calientes,
San Lucas Sacatepéquez, Quiché, Escuintla, Villa Nueva,
Sanarate, Yepocapa, Patzicia and Guatemala-City.
Transiciones
In co-operation with this Guatemalan foundation for the disabled, houses
have been built in Pastores, Caserio Bosareyes en San Luis las Carretas,
all villages in the department of Sacatepéquez.
